Expressive arts therapy is a form of therapy that uses various art forms—such as visual arts, music, dance, drama, writing, nature or play—to help individuals express and process emotions, gain self-awareness, and explore personal issues. It encourages creativity and self-expression, allowing people to communicate in ways that may be difficult with words alone. This type of therapy is often used to support mental health, emotional healing, and personal growth and is particularly helpful for anxiety, depression, and trauma.
I am currently training under Dr. Cathy Malchiodi through the Trauma Informed Expressive Arts Therapy Institue. Dr. Malchiodi developed a theory that I subscribe fully too called the Circle of Capacity. This model focuses on expanding an individual's capacity for having positive experiences in their life and Cathy teaches may differed modes, strategies, and techniques using expressive arts and nature, to increase my client's ability to have positive experiences in life. The more we have positive experiences in our body and mind the easier it is to experience it on a daily basis.
Nature-based therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses the natural environment to promote healing and well-being. It takes therapy outside or incorporates elements of nature into the session using found natural objects or tuning into your five senses, nature therapy also draws on the outside world for metaphors to help navigate and process life experiences. Nature therapy helps individuals reduce stress, improve mental health, regulate the nervous system, and connect with themselves and the world around them. The natural setting provides a calming and grounding space, encouraging relaxation, self-reflection, and emotional healing.
I am certified as a Nature-Based Expressive Arts Practitioner through the Trauma Informed Practices & Expressive Arts Therapy Institute
Narrative therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the stories people tell about their lives. It encourages individuals to view their problems as separate from themselves and reframe their personal narratives in a way that empowers them. By exploring and reshaping these stories, clients can gain new perspectives, find meaning, and create positive change in their lives. This therapy helps people see themselves as the authors of their own stories, with the ability to rewrite and transform them.
Strength-Based Counseling focuses on identifying and leveraging the client's strengths, skills, and resources to overcome challenges. It emphasizes a positive, empowering approach, helping clients recognize their abilities and build resilience.
Client-Centered Counseling (also known as Person-Centered Therapy) is based on the belief that the client is the expert in their own life. The therapist provides a supportive, non-judgmental environment to encourage self-exploration and personal growth. It emphasizes empathy, active listening, and unconditional positive regard to help the client find solutions and healing within themselves.
